Pedro Vite called up to Ecuador U-23 national team for Olympic qualifying tournament

VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC midfielder Pedro Vite has been called up to the Ecuador U-23 national team for the upcoming 2024 CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament in Venezuela. The competition will decide the two South American representatives for the 2024 Summer Olympics in France.

Vite will rejoin Whitecaps FC following the conclusion of Ecuador’s tournament matches. La Tri are in Group A and will play four matches in the preliminary stage, taking on Colombia on January 20, hosts Venezuela on January 23, Bolivia on January 26, and concluding against Brazil on January 29.

The top two teams in Group A will advance to the final stage, a round-robin amongst the four remaining teams to decide the two qualifying sides for the Olympics. Should Ecuador advance, Vite will miss at least the first leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup two-leg series against Tigres UANL on February 7, as Ecuador will play on February 5, 8, and 11.

Vite, 21, made his first appearance for Ecuador’s senior men’s national team on June 20, 2023, scoring on his debut as they defeated Costa Rica 3-1. The midfielder also previously represented his country at the U-17 level, scoring three times in 12 appearances, including a goal against Hungary at the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Last season with the ‘Caps, Vite recorded six goals and added five assists across a team-high 45 appearances in all competitions. The native of Babahoyo, Ecuador, has made 70 appearances during his first two seasons in Vancouver.
