SHERBROOKE, QC - Led by Whitecaps FC Girls Elite head coach Jesse Symons and a number of 'Caps players, Team BC defeated Quebec 3-2 on Thursday to capture gold in women's soccer at the 2013 Canada Summer Games.
Team BC began the match in fine fashion as they took the lead on eight minutes after Sessen Stevens was taken down in the box. Sam Dion stepped up to take the ensuing penalty kick and buried it to give the Western side a 1-0 lead.
British Columbia then doubled their lead on 17 minutes when Seina Kashima intercepted a pass, broke in on goal, and slipped it by the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
On 25 minutes, Quebec cut the deficit to 2-1 on a counterattack. Then on 30 minutes, Team BC were dealt a blow as captain Jasmine Mander was taken out, forcing them to play with 10 players. Quebec capitalized on 33 minutes to level the score at 2-2.
The Westerners would not be denied though, and on 37 minutes a Rachel Jones corner kick was headed in by Dion to restore the lead at 3-2.
Symons squad went on to control the rest of the match with good pressure and good ball movement, riding their lead until the end to capture gold and add yet another accomplishment to what has been an amazing year for an exceptionally talented group of girls.
"This group of players have competed regionally, nationally, and internationally and have shown such a great level of passion and dedication," said Symons after the match in regard to the 'Caps players who represented the province at the Canada Games. "This is an amazing way for the graduating 1995-born players to finish up before moving on to college."
