VANCOUVER, BC – Sixteen games down, 18 to go.
OK, the ‘Caps haven’t hit the halfway mark just yet, but their break from MLS action this weekend makes it a good time for a midseason review.
So, how have Whitecaps FC fared so far?
Here’s what the numbers say (statistics courtesy of Opta Sports).
26
At the end of the day, this is what matters most.
The ‘Caps are currently sitting on 26 points thanks to an 8W-6L-2D record. That’s one more point that they had after the same amount of matches last year. Coming into the weekend, they were tied for the top spot in the Western Conference and second in MLS.
4
A big part of Vancouver’s early season success can be attributed to their vastly improved road form.
The Blue and White have already won four of their eight road matches (all by a score of 1-0), which surpasses their total from last season and matches their previous high in MLS.
On the flip side, they’ll surely be looking to improve their 4W-3L-1D home record in the second half of the season.
7
As mentioned, the ‘Caps have kept a clean sheet in all four of their road wins. They’ve also kept three clean sheets at home for a total of seven on the season. That was tied for the league-high with Seattle Sounders FC and Sporting Kansas City coming into the weekend
125
OK, let’s get into some of the more obscure individual stats.
Centre back Kendall Waston, who is coming off an MLS Team of the Week nod, leads MLS with 125 clearances and 90 headed clearances. He's also the only Whitecaps FC player to have played every minute of every match aside from goalkeeper David Ousted.
42
There’s a reason we call him the maestro.
Pedro Morales currently sits atop the MLS charts with 42 chances created this season. The Chilean also has a team-high four assists and to go along with three goals.
74
It’s no secret how important Matias Laba is to Vancouver’s success.
The Argentine defensive midfielder has 74 tackles thus far, which is just four back of league leader Alvas Powell. It’s also over 20 more than the next closest player.
26
One of Kekuta Manneh’s best traits is his ability to beat defenders in one-v-one situations – just ask Omar Gonzalez. Opta defines that as a successful “dribble” and Manneh is fifth in MLS with 26 of them. FC Dallas winger Fabian Castillo leads the league with 48.
