RIOT REMATCH: Whitecaps FC and Real Salt Lake clash just 20 days after their first meeting in the battle of Rio Tinto Stadium. Coming off consecutive road results, the 'Caps play as the home side this time around, and are opening the gates for fans to attend. The first matchup was tied after regulation time before RSL scored a pair late.
BY COMMITTEE: The first of at least two matches without their Canada MNT call-ups, Wednesday evening provides an opportunity for other players to contribute. In the only match that Lucas Cavallini did not start this season, striker Brian White slotted into the XI and scored in his 'Caps debut against the same RSL side. Cristian Dájome leads VWFC with four goals, while the attack has been getting support from the back. Cristian Gutierrez's two assists is tied with Deiber Caicedo and Dájome for the team lead, and it was Javain Brown who set up White's goal in the previous match against RSL.
KEEPER OPTIONS: With Maxime Crepeau away at the Concacaf Gold Cup, head coach Marc Dos Santos has a number of options at goalkeeper. Thomas Hasal, who turns 22 on Friday, broke out during Crepeau's absence in 2020, beginning his professional career with a 239-minute shutout streak including clean sheets against Chicago Fire FC and Sporting KC at the MLS is Back Tournament. His last start was the 2-1 win over RSL back in September 19, 2020, before his season was cut short due to injury. Offseason acquisition Evan Newton is the USL Championship career leader in saves and shutouts. Homegrown keeper Isaac Boehmer also arrived from Vancouver last week to join first-team training.
