In this edition of "Quality Time" presented by GE Appliances, Vancouver Whitecaps FC forward Damir Kreilach opens up about his journey since joining the league in 2018 and reflects on his incredible experiences in Vancouver so far.
"It's been amazing. From day one, we felt part of the family, especially because Vancouver is an incredible city. We came into a great club, and what makes us even happier is that we are surrounded by great people on a daily basis, and that’s what made our life easier. All credit goes to the people working at the club, and it’s just amazing to be part of it."
How have you and your family settled into life in Vancouver after spending five years in Salt Lake?
It's been amazing. From day one, we felt part of the family, especially because Vancouver is an incredible city. We came into a great club, and what makes us even happier is that we are surrounded by great people on a daily basis, and that’s what made our life easier. All credit goes to the people working at the club, and it’s just amazing to be part of it.
Obviously, you’ve previously visited Vancouver as a member of Real Salt Lake. What were your initial thoughts of the city when you came here to play games, and how has it been exploring the city more now that you play for the club?
I would just say it’s amazing because I think the first time I came to Vancouver in 2018 with RSL, I immediately saw that this city reminds me of my hometown in Croatia. I would say Vancouver is one of the best cities in MLS, and it’s just great to be here, to live here, and enjoy time with my family.
Do you have a favorite place to visit in Vancouver?
We are on the seawall daily because we love the sun and the water. Another favorite spot, especially in the summertime, is Kitsilano Beach.
What's it like to sing "Stand By Me" with the fans after wins at BC Place?
It’s a special moment because, at the end of the day, it’s a reward for all of us—fans, the team, and everyone working for the club. We all know we’re playing to win games, for the fans, and for ourselves. It’s just a great culture that we hope will continue, and we can bring as many wins as possible to BC Place.
Do you have a favorite moment during your time playing in MLS?
There are a couple of moments. [Playing in the] Western Conference Final with RSL in 2021 is one of them. Another is beating LAFC as underdogs in 2018. Also, the team effort to win against Sporting KC in Kansas City to make the playoffs on the last day of the season in 2021.
Let's focus a little more on family for a minute. You have two daughters—tell us what it means to you to be a "girl dad" and what it’s like to be a father figure for them.
It’s special. The thing is, as a dad, you feel even more responsible for your girls. You try to be their role model, show them how to grow, how to behave, and, at the end of the day, to be more chivalrous every day. You also try to be there for them every single second, minute, and day.
What's your favorite TV series?
I would say Breaking Bad.
Do you have a favorite type of food?
Croatian food, which is a lot of meat. I also enjoy some cheat meals after the games, like pizza.
What’s your football pet peeve?
It was a while ago when players used to tuck their jerseys into their shorts. Now we’re in a more modern world. It’s not that I don’t like to see it, but I prefer not to see it anymore. But you know, we’re 100 players with 100 different opinions, so it’s okay.
Do you have any pre-game rituals?
Not many. I just try to keep it simple, focus on the game, and concentrate on helping the team as much as possible, both on and off the field.
Which athlete did you look up to when you were younger?
There were a couple of them. While growing up, Davor Šuker, who played for Real Madrid, was one of them. After that, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo Nazário, and now we know that Luka Modrić is from Croatia, and what he’s doing at his age is just unbelievable.
