Get to know new Vancouver Whitecaps FC right back Sheanon Williams, who helped the 'Caps keep a clean sheet in his MLS debut with the club last weekend.
What photo on your phone means the most to you and why?
Probably just this photo of me leaving to come here and saying goodbye to my daughter. Being a part from my family sucks, so it’s just something I recently took that means something to me.
What’s the story behind your name?
So I was born on St. Patrick’s Day. All the girls were being named Shannon and all the boys were being named Patrick. My mom didn’t like Patrick and I was a boy, so she kind of made up her own thing. Also, all my siblings have SAW as their initials so it made sense to stick with that.
What were your first impressions of the city of Vancouver?
It’s a really cool city. Always a city that I liked visiting when I was on opposing teams. I’m excited to explore it more and excited to see all the stuff it has to offer.
Who is your all-time favourite soccer player?
Back in the day when I used to have favourite players I was a big fan of the original Ronaldo. When I used to play forward back in the day, he was the guy I watched a lot.
When did you switch from forward to right back?
I guess once I started in MLS. I used to play a bunch of different positions.
So you played forward in college?
Yeah, a little bit. And then when I was in the USL I played forward as well.
What’s the last thing you read?
I just read the newish Harry Potter book that came out. The screenplay. I was a big fan when I was younger so I checked it out.
What was the best advice you were ever given?
Just to always do your best. You never know who’s watching.
How would other people describe you in one word?
Easygoing.
Why?
I like to have fun, I like to joke around, and I always try to keep everything light.
What’s your favourite pastime?
I like playing basketball and hanging out with my family.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Probably watching the stupid shows that come on with my wife. Those really girly reality TV shows on the E-Channel and what not.
How about The Bachelor?
My wife has been watching it. When I’m with her, she turns it on and I kind of sit through and watch.
What’s your favourite sports team?
I’m from Boston so I’m a big Patriots fan, Celtics, Bruins, Red Sox, and all that.
What’s the last thing you searched for on Google?
I guess since I was moving here I started searching what places they have here. I felt pretty ignorant. I didn’t know whether there was a Best Buy, Wal-Mart, or that sort of stuff.
What’s the most embarrassing song on your playlist?
I pretty much listen to anything. I’m not embarrassed by anything.
Any Bieber on there?
Probably. I listen to Spotify now so I don’t have anything on my phone. If it’s in the top 100 I probably listen to it. I actually went to a Miley Cyrus concert. I don’t mind Miley.
Which of your teammates would you vote for President/Prime Minister?
I’d probably say AJ. He’s definitely somebody who's aware of the current topics and what not.
When was the last time you cried?
My cat actually just died recently so I gave a good tear for him.
If you weren’t a soccer player, what would you be?
I’d probably be coaching. I’ve always loved the game so I’d try to stay as close to it as I could.
