Vancouver Whitecaps FC will have four of their youth development players attending the Danone Nations Cup after Western Canada was able to defeat Eastern Canada 2-1 via penalty kicks.
Liam Fraser, Devon Jones, David Norman, and Luciano Trasolini are all members of the Whitecaps FC Prospects U-12 squad and were selected from among 7,500 young soccer players from across the country. Players took part in 10 local soccer camps and four provincial Danone Nations Cup selection camps. Players were subsequently split up into two teams, Team Canada West and Team Canada East, giving the winner a berth into the final tournament.
The Danone Nations Cup is a yearly international youth football tournament for boys and girls aged 10-12. The competition is made up of 40 national tournaments and a subsequent World Final. Every year 40 teams are qualified to represent their country in the event.
The Western Canada team will now represent Canada when the Danone Nations Cup world final kicks off in Johannesburg, South Africa, on September 30, 2010.
