WEEKLY STORYLINES

'CAPS AT THE SUMMIT: Vancouver Whitecaps FC enter Matchday 9 action in MLS as the league's most in-form side, leading the Supporters' Shield race with 19 points and boasting an impressive 6W-1L-1D record. The 'Caps have scored the most goals in the league with 17, have the best goal differential at +11, and are tied for the least goals conceded with six. Only eight teams in league history have recorded a goal differential of plus-13 or better through their first nine matches of a season, with the most recent being Austin FC (plus-14) and LAFC (plus-13) in 2022. Whitecaps FC also aim to be the first team since 2022 LAFC to take 22 points in their first nine games of a season.

WHITE'S WORLD: The Blue and White are coming off a dominant 5-1 home victory over Austin FC, a performance that saw Brian White become the first player in the club's MLS era to score four goals in a match. The American international, who is now tied for the league lead in goals with six and has nine across all competitions this season, was deservedly so named the MLS Player of the Matchday. With 64 goals for the 'Caps, White now sits only one goal behind club legend Carl Valentine (65) for fourth on the Vancouver's all-time goalscoring list. His goals at the weekend also saw him become the first VWFC player to reach 50 MLS regular season goals, while extending his club-record for game winners in MLS regular season play with 17. With a pair of goals on Saturday, the United States menā€™s national team forward can become the fifth player in league history, and the first since Chris Wondolowski in 2019, to score six goals over a two-game span. White would join Wondolowski (May 18-26, 2019), Josef MartĆnez (Sept. 13-16, 2017), Robbie Keane (July 4-17, 2016), and Eddie Johnson (May 26 - June 2, 2007) in accomplishing the feat.

SILENCE THE LOU: It'll be a battle of two first-year Scandinavian head coaches in MLS on Saturday as Jesper SĆørensen's side visit Olof Mellberg's St. Louis CITY SC. The 'Caps are one of four teams to remain unbeaten on the road in MLS play this season, posting a 2W-0L-1D record and conceding only one goal. Vancouver enjoyed success in their previous visit to the Lou, securing a 4-1 victory thanks to two goals from Brian White, as well as Ryan Raposo and Fafa Picault. In fact, White has more goals against St. Louis than any other opponent in his career, finding the back of the net in all four previous meetings for a total of seven goals. Meanwhile, St. Louis are in the midst of a four-game losing streak after starting the season unbeaten through their first four matches.
