WEEKLY STORYLINES
RIVALRY WEEK: Fresh off a dominating 4-1 victory against York United FC in Canadian Championship action, Vancouver Whitecaps FC resume MLS play on Saturday as they take on Cascadia rivals Portland Timbers in the second meeting of the season between the two teams. The previous meeting, which took place at BC Place on April 8, saw the 'Caps claim a 1-0 win thanks to Brian White's close range finish. With a win on Saturday, Vancouver will widen their lead at the top of the Cascadia Cup standings and extend their MLS unbeaten streak to nine matches.
UNBEATEN STREAK: With last weekend's win against Minnesota United FC, the 'Caps extended their MLS unbeaten streak to eight matches, which is tied for the longest such streak in the league with Eastern Conference side New England Revolution. In addition, the 'Caps have tallied 11 points in their last five matches, which is also tied for the most in the league with New England. Since the start of April, Vancouver has scored nine goals while only allowing two and keeping four clean sheets in the process.
WHITE GAULD: Two influential pieces in the 'Caps 3-2 victory over Minnesota last weekend were named to the MLS Team of the Matchday on Monday in forward Brian White and attacking midfielder Ryan Gauld. White, who recorded his 50th and 51st career goals, sits as the teams leading goalscorer this season with six goals across all competitions and leads MLS in expected goals with 6.0. Meanwhile, Gauld recorded his third assist across all competitions and has tallied the second-most chances created in the league with 27.
