WEEKLY STORYLINES
PUT OUT THE FIRE: Coming off a thrilling 3-2 victory against Cascadia rivals Portland Timbers last weekend, Vancouver Whitecaps FC continue their seven-game road stretch against two Eastern Conference opponents this week. First up is a clash against Chicago Fire FC at Soldier Field on Wednesday, August 30. The Fire features former 'Caps forward Kei Kamara and Swiss international Xherdan Shaqiri, who scored in the previous meeting between the two teams. The Fire come into the match winless in their last four games across all competitions, while the 'Caps have only one defeat in their last seven.Ā
PLAY BALL: Following the match against the Fire, the 'Caps will train in Chicago in preparation for their next Eastern Conference showdown against New York City FC on Saturday, September 2 at Yankee Stadium. Saturday's clash will mark the 'Caps third trip to Yankee Stadium, having previously visited in 2016 and 2018. Heading into Matchday 29 action, New York City find themselves sitting in 13th place in the East and have dropped five of their last six fixtures across all competitions.
PLAYOFF HUNTING: Last Saturday's victory over Portland boosted the 'Caps up to seventh in the Western Conference and tied for fourth in points-per-game. The Blue and White, who have a game in hand on most teams sitting in a playoff spot, have posted the second-most goals and the third-best goal differential in the West. With a win on Wednesday in Chicago, the 'Caps could jump to as high as third in the West depending on other mid-week results.
