Here are the key storylines to watch.
STORYLINES
Must-win: The ‘Caps must win by at least two goals on Wednesday to advance to the tournament final, whereas a 1-0 win would send the match to extra time. Should they advance, Carl Robinson’s side would face either Toronto FC or Ottawa Fury FC in the two-leg final on August 8 and 15.
Big week at BC Place: Following Wednesday’s semifinal, the ‘Caps host Minnesota on Saturday in a battle between two teams fighting for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Lineup decisions: Robinson made a full lineup change for last week’s first leg, which was sandwiched between trips to D.C. and Seattle. But the ‘Caps boss said this week that when picking his squad for Wednesday he certainly won’t be thinking about the weekend: “We’ll focus one game at a time and we’ll deal with Minnesota afterwards … the next game is the most important and it’s a big game.”
KET MATCHUP
Russell Teibert (CM) vs. Samuel Piette (CM): Teibert and Piette both wore the captain’s armband for their respective teams in last week’s first leg. The Canadian national team teammates are heart-and-soul type players who always leave everything on the field and you can certainly expect that to be the case in Wednesday’s elimination match.
