WEEKLY STORYLINES
SWEEP SPORTING: Vancouver Whitecaps FC are set to return home to BC Place this week for a pair of key Western Conference clashes. First up, the Blue and White face Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday, July 17 in the club's '80s Match, which will see several alumni honoured prior to kickoff. The match will mark the second and final meeting of the regular season between the two sides, with the 'Caps claiming a 2-1 away victory back in May at Children's Mercy Park thanks to a brace from Ryan Gauld. Vancouver heads into Wednesday's tilt riding a five-game unbeaten run across all competitions, which includes their dominant 4-1 road victory against St. Louis CITY SC last Saturday. The team has also posted a 0.75 goals against average in their last four matches.
THE PLACE TO BE: Wednesday's match will mark the start of a heavy home stretch for the 'Caps as they wrap up their 2024 MLS regular season campaign. Starting on Wednesday, the 'Caps will play eight of their final 12 regular season matches at BC Place. The club will be hosting several Celebration Matches during the stretch, including their 11th annual Pride Celebration against Houston Dynamo FC on Saturday, '90s Match against LAFC on August 24, Next Gen Match against FC Dallas on September 7, and 21st Century Match against San Jose Earthquakes on September 14. Following Saturday's match against Houston, the 'Caps will enter a one-month break from league play to participate in Leagues Cup 2024. The club will also welcome Welsh side Wrexham AFC during the break for a match on Saturday, July 27 at BC Place.
THE WHITE GAULD SHOW: Brian White and Ryan Gauld have been in scintillating form for the 'Caps in recent weeks. Thanks to his brace at the weekend against St. Louis, White is up to 12 goals this season, with seven of those coming in the last four MLS matches - the most in the league during that span. The brace saw White score his 50th goal for Whitecaps FC across all competitions and earned him a spot on MLS' Team of the Matchday. Meanwhile, Gauld has tallied a goal as well as five assists in his last four appearances, including two assists in the last match at St. Louis that also saw him named to the MLS Team of the Matchday. The 2024 MLS All-Star midfielder has recorded 14 goal contributions since Matchday 15, which is tied for the third-most goal contributions in the league during that span. The Scotsman is also closing in on 80 goal contributions across all competitions for the club, currently sitting at 79 (36 goals, 43 assists).
