What a weekend!
After winning ugly in previous weeks, the ‘Caps came up big to beat defending MLS champs LA Galaxy 2-0 at BC Place on Saturday night. It was a night to remember as the boys in Blue and White dominated their star-studded counterparts from first to last, while a raucous sold-out crowd cheered them on from the stands.
Whitecaps FC fans are certainly happy to see their team sitting on top of the standings right now, but what did the media make of the team's performance?
The Province – Marc Weber singled out Budweiser Man of the Match Nicolas Mezquida in his post-game analysis, stating that the 23-year-old Uruguayan set the tone for team’s win. “He buzzed around from the opening whistle,” Weber wrote. “He chased down the ball, put L.A. under pressure, and when the Caps’ were in possession he popped up everywhere to combine with teammates.”
The Vancouver Sun – “Oh yes, these are heady times for the young and entertaining Vancouver Whitecaps” wrote Gary Kingston in The Sun as he praised Carl Robinson and his dynamic young team. However, he also had a note of caution for ‘Caps fans who are currently residing on Cloud Nine. “It was a good result for us, but it was one game,” he wrote quoting Robinson. “We’ll enjoy it tonight, but tomorrow it’s gone.” Kingston also praised ‘Caps captain Pedro Morales, who he said turned in “in his best 90 minutes of the season.”
Metro – Robinson’s high standards was the main talking point in Cam Tucker’s post-match piece for the Metro. “Pleased with the results so far, Robinson is still trying to implement a higher standard with what is still a very young team.” Tucker also reminded fans that the ‘Caps roared out of the gates last year as well after an impressive opening day victory over New York.
The Globe and Mail – Whitecaps FC “finally have the makings of a team that could be one of the best,” according to The Globe and Mail's David Ebner, who wrote: “Robinson, a 38-year-old Welshman, has crafted a physical, fast, attacking squad.”
MLSsoccer.com – “It's still very early days, and 'Caps coach Carl Robinson is very much keeping his feet firmly on the ground,” wrote MLSsoccer.com's Michael McColl. “But Vancouver's start to the season will make many around the league start to sit up and take notice.”
Around the league
Armchair Analyst – Midfield battles, the emergence of Harry Shipp and the return of Ozzie Alonso were among the subjects tackled by the league’s Armchair Analyst this week.
League Highlights - Big saves and slick flicks are among the league highlights this week.
Coming up – After Wednesday's match against Columbus Crew (tickets still available), the ‘Caps play both San Jose and Real Salt Lake in coming weeks and fans got an opportunity to see what they will be up against when the two teams faced off against each other on Sunday.
