New Vancouver Whitecaps FC striker Anthony Blondell played his final game for Venezuelan Primera Division club Monagas SC on Sunday.
And it’s one he’ll never forget.
Blondell scored his league-leading 24th goal of the season to help Monagas defeat Deportivo Lara 2-0 (2-1 on aggregate) and win the 2017 Venezuelan Primera Division championship – the club’s first title in its 30 years of existence.

“I could not go to MLS without leaving a star for this great club,” Blondell said following the match.
The victory caps off a banner season for the 23-year-old, who also scored in the final of the Torneo Apertura back in July, was named the player of the tournament, and earned his first cap for the Venezuelan national team. Blondell’s 24 goals were the most of any player in the Venezuelan Primera Division since the 2001-02 season.
Last month, Whitecaps FC acquired Blondell from Monagas and signed him to a three-year deal with a club option for a fourth. In an interview last week, Blondell said he’s already taking English classes in preparation for the move.
The ‘Caps have also sinceacquired two-time MLS all-star striker Kei Kamara.
