MLS announced today the list of 34 players eligible for Free Agency heading into the 2019 season.
Starting at 12 p.m. PT on Tuesday, Dec. 11, Free Agents may engage in negotiations with MLS clubs outside of their previous club.
Players 28 years of age and older with eight MLS service years who are out of contract, or have had their option declined, are eligible for Free Agency in 2018, allowing them the freedom to negotiate a new contract with any MLS club, including their previous club, subject to certain restrictions. A player has fulfilled a year of service if they were on a club’s roster prior to Aug. 15 or played in at least one regular season or postseason game in the relevant year subject to USL loan exceptions.
Striker Kei Kamara has opted out of free agency and opted into Friday’s MLS Re-Entry Draft. Whitecaps FC confirmed on Monday that Kamara will not be returning to the club in 2019.
“Kei was an important part of the team last year and we're thankful for his time at the club,” said head coach Marc Dos Santos. “We evaluated what we want in this position for next season, while also keeping in mind the medium and long term. We are looking for characteristics that are very specific as a whole. We wish Kei all the best.”
