VANCOUVER, BC – Have you ever been to a foreign country?
If so, then you’d probably agree that adjusting to the new surroundings, lifestyle, and culture can be a challenge. Several Vancouver Whitecaps FC players can speak from experience.
Over the past two seasons, the ‘Caps have brought in five Latin American players: Honduran Johnny Leverón, Chilean Pedro Morales, Argentine Matías Laba, and Uruguayans Sebastián Fernández and Nicolás Mezquida.
With Noche Latina approaching, whitecapsfc.com's Jose Luis Perez caught up with the Latinos to talk about their transition to Canada, and ultimately, Vancouver.
THE TRANSITION
Pedro Morales: “For me, one of the greatest difficulties was to leave close friends from Marbella, Spain behind as well as family members. But Whitecaps FC has been more than supportive as they try to make you as happy as possible. For instance, they helped me bring my wife to Canada and for that I am very grateful.”
Sebastián Fernández: “The club has been amazing. They take the time to get to know us on a personal level and cover every necessity we come across like transportation, housing, and legal documentation. You name it, the club is always there for us just as families are.”
Johnny Leverón: “I was able to help all my teammates in potential difficulties I previously encountered when I first joined the squad. We’ve been growing together.”
LANGUAGE BARRIER
Matías Laba: “We not only spend time with the Latinos in the club, but also we try to speak English as much as possible. Our English-speaking teammates have been pretty attentive to what we’re trying to say and support us whenever we need assistance to prevent the language from becoming an impediment in our communication.”
Johnny Leverón: “Language has been a difficulty for all of us, but the club supports us with English lessons that increase our fluency. The club has coaches and translators who are knowledgeable in Spanish and that helps us as well. Really, the club assists us with every personal issue we face and makes sure that the only thing we worry about is to perform on the field.”
Pedro Morales: “Even though the language was not on our side, I haven’t encountered a problem in making close bonds with the people here. In terms of socializing, I haven’t had a problem.”
ADVICE TO OTHERS
Sebastián Fernández: “At the end of the day, we were able to adapt pretty quickly. In my opinion, everyone is able to adapt to any culture if they give it their best and that’s what we’ve done with this club.”
Nicolás Mezquida: “Never give up. Language is one stone they will encounter on their path but while showcasing their talent, they will be able to kick that stone out of their way and continue their path. They brought me here for what I bring on the field. If you can show what you’re capable of doing and if you continue to grow, while staying positive, you can make it as far as you believe.”

VANCOUVER, BC – ¿Alguna vez han vivido en un país extranjero?
Si su respuesta es positiva, entonces probablemente concuerden con el hecho de que amoldarse a una nueva cultura y estilo de vida puede llegar a ser un desafío.
Varios jugadores de Vancouver Whitecaps coinciden con esto basándose en su experiencia en Canadá.
En las últimas dos temporadas, Whitecaps FC han conseguido cinco jugadores de Latinoamérica: el hondureño Johnny Leverón, chileno Pedro Morales, argentino Matías Laba y los uruguayos Sebastián Fernández y Nicolás Mezquida.
Con la Noche Latina acercándose, whitecapsfc.com obtuvo una charla cercana con los jugadores Latinos acerca de su traslado a Canadá, y ultimadamente a Vancouver.
LA TRANSICION
Pedro Morales: “La parte más difícil para mí fue el dejar a mis amigos cercanos de Marbella, España atrás al igual que a familiares. Pero Whitecaps FC ha sido de gran apoyo ya que ellos intentan hacer de tu estancia un lugar feliz y cómodo para vivir. Por ejemplo, ellos me ayudaron a traer a mi esposa a Canadá y por eso estoy eternamente agradecido.”
Sebastián Fernández: “El club ha sido fenomenal. Ellos de verdad se toman el tiempo de conocerte personalmente y cubrir todas tus necesidades básicas así como transportación, vivienda, y documentaciones legales. Solo dilo, el club siempre estará ahí para lo que necesitemos como una familia.”
Johnny Leverón: “Fui capaz de apoyar a mis compañeros en problemas que yo previamente enfrente cuando llegue al equipo por primera vez. Hemos todos crecido en unidad.”
LA BARRERA DEL IDIOMA
Matías Laba: “Nosotros no solo convivimos con los Latinos en el club, pero también intercambiamos conversaciones con nuestros compañeros que hablan inglés lo más posible. Nuestros compañeros han sido muy atentos a lo que les queremos decir y nos apoyan en lo que sea que necesitemos para prevenir el idioma de convertirse en un impedimento en nuestra comunicación.”
Johnny Leverón: “El idioma ha sido difícil para todos nosotros, pero el club nos ha apoyado y nos ha brindado con clases de inglés, las cuales han incrementado nuestra fluidez. El club cuenta con directores y traductores quienes hablan algo de español y esto nos ayuda a crecer también. En verdad, el club nos asiste en cada problema personal que tengamos y se asegura de que la única cosa por la cual tenemos que preocuparnos es de dar lo mejor en el campo.”
Pedro Morales: “Incluso aunque el idioma no estaba de nuestro lado, yo no he tenido ningún problema en formar relaciones cercanas con la gente aquí. Cuando se trata de socializar, no tengo mayor problema.”
EL CONSEJO PARA TODOS
Sebastián Fernández: “Al final del día, fuimos capaces de adaptarnos rápidamente. En mi opinión, cualquiera es posible de adaptarse a la cultura que sea si están dispuestos a dar lo mejor de ellos mismos y eso es lo que hemos hecho nosotros dentro del club.”
Nicolás Mezquida: “Nunca se den por vencidos. El idioma es una piedra más en el camino de uno, pero al sobresaltar y presentar tu talento con éxito, entonces podrás patear esa piedra fuera y continuar tu camino. El club me trajo aquí por lo que aporto en el campo. Si tú puedes demostrar lo que eres capaz de hacer y continuas creciendo, mientras te mantienes positivo, tu podrás llegar lejos en un futuro si tú lo crees posible.”
