The Jamaican national team will meet Trinidad & Tobago in the 2014 Caribbean Cup Final on Tuesday – thanks largely to the play of Vancouver Whitecaps FC striker Darren Mattocks.
Mattocks scored a goal in each of Jamaica’s three group stage matches: a 1-1 draw with Martinique, a 3-0 win over Antigua & Barbuda (watch Mattocks' goal above) and a 2-0 win over Haiti. His three goals are tied for the most in the tournament and he also picked up an assist Sunday against Haiti.
“I am never satisfied whether I score one, two or three goals,” Mattocks said in an article published on concacaf.com. “I am never satisfied whether I score single or double digit goals in a season, I always feel like I can do more. But coming from the Whitecaps and coming to Jamaica and scoring goals is good for me, and hopefully when I go back to Vancouver, I can transfer that form.”
Mattocks, who finished second on Whitecaps FC with six goals and three assists in 2014, has now scored six goals in 17 appearances for the Jamaican senior men’s national team.
The winner of the Caribbean Cup will earn a berth in the Copa América Centenario, a 2016 tournament that will feature the best national teams from both the CONMEBOL and CONCACAF regions.
