League1 BC: Men's side suffer first defeat

VICTORIA, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC Boys MLS Academy suffered their first defeat of the season, falling to a 1-0 loss at Centennial Stadium against Victoria Highlanders FC this Sunday afternoon.

The home opened the scoring inside the 20th minute of the match. Jonathan Walter’s long attempt on target snuck its way past the goal line, giving his team a 1-0 lead.

After the halftime interval, the Blue & White looked to find some pressure in midfield. Following a deflected cross, the ball found its way to Michael Hennessy. His turn around move and attempt from close range was parried away by goalkeeper Daniel Zadravec in the 56th minute.

As the match progressed, Highlanders FC substitute Francesco Bartolillo saw his shot followed by a strong reactionary save by goalkeeper Ben Alexander in the 77th minute. The young ‘Caps looked to find an equalizer in the late stages of the match, but the final whistle blew in Victoria.

Whitecaps FC Boys MLS Academy are back at home next Sunday, June 11, as they are set to host Nautsa’mawt FC at Ken Woods Field with kickoff at 2:30 p.m. PT.
