NANAIMO, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC Girls Elite recorded a 4-1 win at Q’unq’inuqwstuxw Stadium in their first ever match with League1 BC expansion side Harbourside FC this Wednesday evening.
The Blue Stars/FIFA Youth Cup Champions had a strong first half and scored the first goal of the match. Following some pressure in the attacking half, Emma Yee’s pass connected to Kierra Blundell, as the forward’s strike found the back of the net in the 15th minute.
Moments later, the young ‘Caps would double their advantage in the 20th minute. Ashley Roberts’ long drive from distance curled its way into the top right corner of the net to make it 2-0.
With the match progressing, Harbourside FC responded. Former Whitecaps FC Girls Elite player Jazmine Wilkinson’s controlled volley flew into the top corner of the cage to bring her squad back within one in the 30th minute of the match.
Late in the match, the visiting 'Caps battled their way through the midfield to win the ball back. Blundell then fed a quick ball for Mia Guterres, and the Pre-Girls Elite Academy player's attempt on target extended her team’s lead in the 80th minute.
Vancouver looked to continue building up on their pressure in the second half. Following a transition play, Keelyn Stewart sent a ball in from the left side of the field, which connected to her sister Taegan Stewart, as her quick strike inside the area would then put things away for the ‘Caps in the 87th minute of the match.
The Blue & White are back home next Saturday, May 27 as they are set to host TSS Rovers at Ken Woods Field for a 12 p.m. kickoff. The fixture will be the League1 BC feature match on TELUS Optik TV channel 1993, and on the League1 BC YouTube channel.
