VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC winger Lass Bangoura has been called up to the Guinean men's national team for the upcoming 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, the club confirmed on Wednesday.
The continent's biennial international men's football championship organized by the Confederation of African Football begins on June 21, with Guinea competing with Nigeria, Madagascar, and Burundi in group play through June 30.
The top two teams of each group, along with the best four third-placed teams, advance to the round of 16. The tournament culminates with the final in Cairo on July 19.
As a result, Bangoura will miss Saturday's home date versus Colorado Rapids, and next week's road trip to FC Dallas and Seattle Sounders FC. Bangoura could possibly miss more matches depending if Guinea qualify past the group stage.
Bangoura has four goals in 34 caps with Guinea MNT, having made his debut in 2011 at age 19.
