VANCOUVER, BC – Kings of Cascadia, once more.
Vancouver Whitecaps FC reclaimed the Cascadia Cup on Sunday afternoon at BC Place, defeating Portland Timbers 4-1 in their 2016 MLS regular season finale.
The ‘Caps entered the match three points back of both Portland and Seattle in the Cascadia Cup standings. They knew they needed to win, and do so by at least three goals to pass Portland on goal differential, to finish above their Pacific Northwest rivals.
And that’s exactly what they did.
The three teams ended up finishing with identical 3W-3L-0D records in head-to-head matches against one another, but Whitecaps FC’s 4-1 win gives them the edge on goal differential.

Two of Vancouver’s three wins came at home against Portland, in addition to earning a road win at Seattle in the Cascadia Cup opener on March 19. Whitecaps FC midfielder Pedro Morales led the competition in scoring with five goals.
This was Vancouver’s sixth Cascadia Cup, and third in the last four years, which makes them the most successful club in competition history. Seattle, who won last year’s Cascadia Cup, have four titles to their name, followed by Portland with three.

BACKGROUND
The Cascadia Cup represents one of the most passionate derby rivalries in North America.
Known for the region of North America that Vancouver, Seattle, and Portland represent, the Cascadia Cup was created by the supporters of Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Seattle Sounders FC, and Portland Timbers. Officially founded in 2004, the origins of the Cup date back to when all three clubs were members of the United Soccer Leagues First Division.
The combined fan-based organizations of the three clubs came together to produce the two-foot-tall silver Cascadia Cup, which is awarded annually to the team with the best head-to-head record in regular season matches between their Pacific Northwest rivals.
The fans created this competition – and it's the fans that make it so special.
