Vancouver Whitecaps FC are honoured to have Noah and Reid from Hope and Health as Kid Captains of the club's home match against LA Galaxy at Rio Tinto Stadium on June 23.
Hope and Health is a non-profit organization and longstanding 'Caps community partner that uses sport and play for social impact, developing life and leadership skills with Indigenous children and youth. The organization's support of development initiatives, while primarily focused on Indigenous children and youth, are also inclusive of Hope and Health'ers extended family and friends.
This was the situation when ten-year-old Noah, a long-term Hope and Health participant, invited his friend Reid to join him at the 8th Annual VI Hope and Health Community Camp in 2019. The boys had a blast and full intentions to repeat the experience in 2020 together—until the COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to a halt.
Hope and Health quickly pivoted to launch a virtual program called Hope and Health at Home Online (H3), and with Noah joining, Reid was also offered a space to connect with his friend online. Reid and Noah both showed up weekly, had the opportunity to be in the same break out home group, and kept their friendship bright and strong.
Reid and Noah's coaches and fellow participants were inspired by their dedication, positivity and team spirit
. Despite
the physical separation during the pandemic, Noah and Reid's friendship remained strong and an inspiration to all.
Noah and Reid continue to be shining examples of what respect and connection between cultures and families looks like, especially during this difficult time for Indigenous relations in Canada. On behalf of the club, the 'Caps thank Noah and Reid for being role models in their communities.
From June 21 to 27, Whitecaps FC and Hope and Health are hosting the Changing Lives Auction as part of our recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day. Net proceeds will support Hope and Health's ongoing programming. To see the auction items and bid, visit whitecapsfc.com/auction.
