VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC centre back Johnny Leverón has been called up to the national team of Honduras for the 2014 Copa Centroamericana in the United States from September 3 to September 13. The Honduran team, alongside six other Central American teams, will compete to become champions of Central America while also looking to secure a spot at both the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup and 2016 Copa América Centenario.
The native of Yoro, Honduras will miss three matches with Whitecaps FC, including the September 6 home match against D.C. United, the September 10 home match versus San Jose Earthquakes, and the September 13 road match at FC Dallas.
At the Copa Centroamericana, Honduras will play against Belize at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. on September 3 before they meet El Salvador at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas on September 7. The Hondurans will conclude the group stage on September 10 as they meet Guatemala at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas. The final, third place match, and fifth place match will all take place on September 13 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
The top four teams automatically move on to the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup, while the champion will also qualify for the 2016 Copa América Centenario. The team coming in fifth place will meet the fifth place team from the 2014 Caribbean Cup tournament to decide which nation moves forward to the Gold Cup.
Leveron, who has started 32 of his 33 all-time MLS appearances for Whitecaps FC, will be looking to add to his 22 appearances and three goals for the Honduras senior men’s national team. Most recently, the 5-foot-11,160-pound centre back was named to his country’s provisional squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, just missing out on the final cut.
