VANCOUVER, BC – A pair of Vancouver Whitecaps FC players appeared in international matches on Monday, including World Cup hopeful Steven Beitashour.

The ‘Caps defender earned his fifth cap with the Iranian men’s national team, playing 45 minutes in a scoreless draw with Montenegro on Monday. Beitashour, who was subbed on at the start of the second half, was one of 28 players named to Iran’s provisional roster for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which is slated to begin on June 12 in Brazil. The deadline for participating countries to name their final 23-man roster is June 2. Iran has one more friendly before then against Angola on May 30.
Mattocks started and played 45 minutes for the Jamaican senior men’s national team in a 2-1 loss to Serbia Monday at Red Bull Arena in New York. The Jamaican striker, who has played on the wing in the past with the national team, was used as part of a two-striker tandem. It was the 23-year-old’s 14th appearance with the Jamaican senior men’s national team. Mattocks will be available for Jamaica’s friendly against Switzerland on May 30 in Lucerne, Switzerland, before joining the ‘Caps in Portland this weekend.
Mitchell joined the Trinidadian men’s national team this past weekend in Port of Spain, as Trinidad and Tobago prepare for a pair of upcoming friendlies against World Cup-bound sides Argentina (on June 4) and Iran (on June 8). The 6-foot-2, 175-pound centre back will miss Vancouver’s MLS matches this weekend against Portland Timbers and on June 7 against Philadelphia Union.
Canadian senior men’s national team
The Canadian senior men’s national team picked up a pair of draws in their first two international fixtures of 2014. Canada played to a 1-1 draw with Bulgaria on May 23 before earning another 1-1 draw with Moldova on Tuesday. Whitecaps FC midfielder Bryce Alderson and Residency centre back Jackson Farmer both participated in the camp, but did not appear in either match. Canada’s next scheduled match is a friendly against Jamaica on September 9 at BMO Field in Toronto.
