VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s 1-0 loss to Sporting Kansas City on Sunday night at BC Place capped off an interesting weekend of Major League Soccer action.
Here are some of the headlines.
FIREWORKS AT YANKEE STADIUM
Chances are you won’t see a game like this again any time soon.
There were eight goals, four penalty kicks, and a Sebastian Giovinco hat-trick in the span of nine minutes. In the end, both Toronto FC and New York City FC were left questioning their defending after a bizarre and entertaining 4-4 draw.
WASTON AND DWYER DOWNPLAY ‘TURF WAR’
Whitecaps FC centre back Kendall Waston and Sporting KC striker Dom Dwyer enjoyed quite the battle on Sunday night at BC Place – one that nearly boiled over towards the end of the match.
Here’s what Waston had to say about the encounter.
“He fights for his team, I fight for mine, so at the end of the game we shake hands and everything stays on the pitch.”

CASCADIA WOES
Vancouver’s Cascadia rivals also suffered defeats over the weekend.
Seattle Sounders FC fell 1-0 to Chicago Fire, while Portland Timbers were beaten 3-0 by Philadelphia Union.
As a result, Whitecaps FC remain tied with Seattle, and now FC Dallas, for the top spot in the Western Conference – one point up on fourth-place Portland (click here to see the updated standings).
Fittingly, the ‘Caps and Timbers meet this Saturday at Providence Park (7:30 p.m. PT on TSN).
