Huitema makes home debut for Canadian women's national team in 3-1 victory

Christine Sinclair had a goal and an assist and 16-year-old Vancouver Whitecaps FC Girls Elite BC Soccer REX forward Jordyn Huitema made her home debut for Canada’s women’s national team in a 3-1 win over Costa Rica on Thursday night in Winnipeg.

Jesse Fleming and Adriana Leon also found the back of the net for Canada.

Huitema, who replaced Sinclair in the 79th minute, looked lively in her third appearance with the women’s national team, creating two late opportunities.

A native of Chilliwack, B.C., Huitema joined the Whitecaps FC Girls Elite REX Program in Partnership with BC Soccer in January 2015 after previously playing with Surrey United SC in the EA SPORTS BC Soccer Premier League. Earlier this year, she became the third youngest player to debut for the Canadian women’s national team.

With the victory, Canada have improved their 2017 international record to 5W-2L-1D. Canada will face Costa Rica in a second straight friendly on Sunday in Toronto (11 a.m. PT on TSN2).
