VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC recorded a 6-2 victory against Western Conference side Houston Dynamo FC this Wednesday evening at BC Place.
The ‘Caps opened the first half by scoring the fastest goal in their Major League Soccer history inside the 15th second of the match. After a long pass was played through the centre and off a Dynamo defender, Brian White controlled the ball and then passed it to Pedro Vite, whose strike found the back of the net.
Fast forward to the eighth minute, Houston responded on their own with a counter attack. Coco Carrasquilla’s cross from the right side of the field connected to Corey Baird, and the forward’s close range shot would even the match.
The away side continued to attack. Daniel Steres’ long through ball found Amine Bassi, and after a soft first touch he followed up with a tidy finish in the 16th minute.
The goals continued to pour down at BC Place. Fullback LuÃs Martins whipped a quick ball from the left flank of the field, Ryan Gauld’s header fell to Julian Gressel, as the midfielder then sent in a powerful volley to make it 2-2 in the 18th minute of the match.
Right after the halftime interval, the 'Caps scored on a play drawn up by assistant coach Michael D'Agostino. A ball forward saw attacking midfielder Ryan Gauld hit a strong volley attempt off the post. Striker Brian White then followed suit with a rebound goal to put his squad up 3-2, 10 seconds into the second half.
The Blue & White were far from done.
The 'Caps sprung themselves on a counter attack later on in the 59th minute. Gressel converted a rebound effort to give his squad a 4-2 cushion.
The scoring continued with midfielder Sebastian Berhalter thundering home a volley strike for his first career goal in the 88th minute.
Minutes later, the record came for the 'Caps. After patiently waiting down the midfield, Berhalter’s assist to Gauld in the 95th minute made things 6-2 for the ‘Caps.
The Blue & White continue their four-game home stand with a matchup against Western Conference rivals Sporting Kansas City this coming Saturday, June 3.
