Former Vancouver Whitecaps FC striker Kenny Miller announced his retirement on Thursday, concluding a decorated 24-year professional career.
“It has been a career far beyond my expectations," said Miller. "I would like to think that i give all young players hope that if you give everything you’ve got in every training session and match you can play at the highest level. I’ve scored goals in the Premier League, Champions League and at International level and you can’t ask for much more than that. Representing my country and pulling on that shirt as many times i did is the greatest honour any young Scottish kid could have. If you had told me when i was a young boy at Hibs that my career would have gone like this i would have laughed at you! There are a lot of people i would like to thank not least Donald Park who gave me the best grounding and education any young footballer could have had during my time at Hibs and Walter Smith who was brave enough to bring me back to Rangers for the second time when most managers would have said no, Walter always had a knack of getting an extra 10 percent out of me that i didn’t know i had - hopefully i have made them both proud.”
Miller played in more than 800 club games with 268 career goals. He represented his home country of Scotland 69 times, placing sixth all-time in goals scored with 18.
Miller began his career at Hutchison Vale and went on to make his senior debut with Hibernian. He would later play for Rangers, and was the first player to ever cross the Old Firm divide when he signed for rivals Celtic. He would also play for Wolverhampton Wanderers and Derby County in England, followed by Bursaspor in Turkey, Cardiff City in Wales, and then to Vancouver from 2012 to 2014. He would conclude his career back in Scotland with a third stint at Rangers, followed by Livingston, Dundee, and Partick Thistle.
With the 'Caps, Miller started 34 of his 44 MLS matches, scoring 13 goals and recording three assists. Notably, the Scotsman appeared in the 'Caps first ever MLS Cup Playoffs match in 2012.
