VANCOUVER, BC – Canada Soccer announced today the list of nominees for the 2017 Canada Soccer Player Awards and eight different Vancouver Whitecaps FC players are in contention.
On the men’s side, Alphonso Davies and Marcel de Jong are both up for the Canadian men’s player of the year after playing key roles in helping Canada reach the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup for the first time since 2009. Davies, who earned his Canadian citizenship in June, is also up for the Canadian U-17 men’s player of the year after winning the award in 2016.
On the women’s side, Whitecaps FC BC REX midfielder Julia Grosso is up for the U-20 women’s player of the year while Maya Antoine, Jordyn Huitema, Maya Ladhani, Jayde Riviere, Caitlin Shaw are among the six nominees for the Canadian U-17 women’s player of the year.
Media and coaches will vote on the two Canadian Players of the Year while coaches will also vote on the two Canadian U-20 Players of the Year and Canadian U-17 Players of the Year.
Canadian Players of the Year
Voting by Canadian media and coaches, selecting first choice, second choice, and third choice. The award celebrates Canada Soccer’s top footballers in recognition of their 2017 achievements with both the National Team and their respective club teams. Winners to be announced on 14 and 15 December.
