Canada Soccer announced on Monday that eight players from the Whitecaps FC Girls Elite BC Soccer REX program have been called in to a West identification camp for the National EXCEL program. Another eight players were called in from the Whitecaps FC Alberta REX academy, and two each from academy centre provincial partners Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Additionally, five players we called from Whitecaps FC academy centre partners to an East identification camp.
The eight players from the Whitecaps FC BC Soccer REX program are Stella Downing, Abigail Schwartz, Danielle Mosher, Caitlin Shaw, Joanna Verzosa-Dolezal, Daniela Ramirez, Maya Rogers, and Omeha Sandhu. The eight players from the WFC Alberta REX academy are Hannah Duguid, Mya Jones, Allison Jeanne Remington, Olivia Anne Kranjcec, Grace Stordy, Andersen Williams, Shanice Alfred-Toker, Grace Mwasalla - with seven of the eight players taking part in the recent Whitecaps FC HPP Academy Centre camp in Vancouver.
From partners at the Manitoba Soccer Association are Taylor Sousa (2016 Manitoba Academy Centre Player of the Year) and Mariah Arnott (November Player of the Month), and from the Saskatchewan Soccer Association Cassandra Chometa and Renee DeCorby,
On the East coast, Isabella Hanisch gets the call from Ottawa South United, while Mya Harnish, Oluwateniola (Teni) Akindoju, and Sydney Kennedy join from Nova Scotia, and Alexandra Murphy from Newfoundland and Labrador.
The camps will take place in Laval, QC from February 20-23 (East), and in Burnaby, BC from February 27 to March 2 (West).
Canada Soccer National Excel identification camps give players an opportunity to be assessed and monitored by Canada Soccer national staff, while training with the best young talent in Canada.
Led by Bev Priestman, Canada Soccer’s National EXCEL Director, National EXCEL identification camps will continue to ensure that the Women’s Excel Development Program access Canada’s best talent on the path to the Women’s National Team.
“By casting the net wider in these key maturation years, we aim to ensure no potential talent is missed. With development and monitoring of these players taking place inside Regional EXCEL Centres for the most part, we will assess and build on the Gold Medal Profiles of these players to continue producing more Sinclairs, Buchanans and Flemings, by design, more often,” said Priestman. The alignment of our talent development system from regional to national will ultimately create a much greater opportunity to reach the top of the podium at the senior level, not only in Tokyo 2020, but also in 2024 and beyond.”
