Originating in 2008, the Amway Canadian Championship is a tournament that was developed among the top professional soccer teams in Canada. The winning team is awarded the coveted Voyageurs Cup which not only sees them named Canadian champions, but also acts as their ticket into the CONCACAF Champions League.
This competition involves the top 24 clubs from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. The winner of that tournament then qualifies as the representative for the annual FIFA Club World Cup, allowing them to compete against the world’s best teams from every region.
The ACC final will be the first meeting between Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Montreal Impact in the 2013 season. In the semifinals, Montreal overcame a 2-0 deficit on aggregate heading into the second leg against Toronto FC, proving themselves victorious with an impressive 6-0 win in the second leg to earn their place in the final. The 'Caps, meanwhile, earned their place in the final with a 5-2 aggregate series win over FC Edmonton.
Last year, the ‘Caps and Impact met in the 2012 season opener where Vancouver defeated Montreal by a score of 2-0. Emotions will run high as these two rivals face each other with the ACC title on the line for the first time.
The ‘Caps will be eager to prove themselves as the top Canadian team and have the opportunity to lift the Voyageurs Cup right here at home. Leg two of the ACC final will be played on May 29 at BC Place where Whitecaps FC supporters will have the unique chance of seeing their team lift their first competitive trophy since joining MLS in 2011.
Come out and support your Whitecaps FC as they battle to raise the Voyageurs Cup right here at BC Place and earn the title of Amway Canadian Champions.
