VANCOUVER, BC – Doneil Henry’s second goal of the year wasn’t enough to snatch all three points for Whitecaps FC as Philadelphia Union found the back of the net in the second half to split the points at BC Place Saturday afternoon.
It was a hard fought battle at home against Philadelphia who were entering BC Place in good form, winning four of their last five matches and tied for third in the Eastern Conference.
Head coach Marc Dos Santos opted to go with the same starting XI that saw the ‘Caps defeat the league leading Los Angeles Football Club just over a week ago.
Man of the Match Yordy Reyna was all over the ball in the first half, having two shots on goal and one shot ringing off the post in the 14th minute after Russell Teibert played a wonderful ball played into the box for the Peruvian.
After a fairly even first 40 minutes of play, the ‘Caps took the advantage on an Ali Adnan corner kick that found the head of Doneil Henry for his second goal of the year. The assist was Adnan’s first with Whitecaps FC, coming in his sixth MLS start.
The ‘Caps took the lead into the half but Philadelphia equalized after a ‘Caps turnover in the 66th minute that gave Philadelphia Union striker Kacper Przybylko a chance to run at goal and pot home his first MLS goal to even the score.
It was a tense final 20 minutes as both teams were looking for a result. In the 70th minute the ball fell to Lucas Venuto’s feet but the Brazilian couldn’t keep the shot down as it sailed just inches above goal. Philadelphia’s goal scorer Przybylko answered right back with a chance of his own, but goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau was there to stop one of the two saves he made on the afternoon.
Whitecaps FC are back on the road this Friday, May 3 when they visit Colorado Rapids. Kickoff at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park is at 6 p.m. PT live on TSN and TSN Radio 1040. They are back home the following Friday, May 10 when they host Cascadia rival Portland Timbers at BC Place. Visit whitecapsfc.com for ticket information.
