Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Tony Donatelli has been named in the final USL-1 Team of the Week for the 2007 regular season.
The Glenside, Pennsylvania native - who claimed this season’s Jock MacDonald Unsung Hero award - made the all-star XI for Week 21 after scoring in last Friday’s 1-1 home draw with Atlanta Silverbacks.
Donatelli was the only Whitecaps player to make the weekly team, as he was joined in midfield by Carolina RailHawks’ Stuart Brightwell, Seattle Sounders’ Leighton O’Brien, and Rochester Raging Rhinos’ Rey Martinez. Atlanta Silverbacks midfielder Tony McManus was also selected after scoring his side’s late equalizer against Vancouver and helping the Georgia-based club claim a fourth-place finish in the USL-1 standings.
Former Whitecaps goalkeeper Josh Wicks made the team after his sublime shot-stopping performance in helping Portland Timbers earn a goalless draw in Vancouver last Sunday. Three defenders in Montreal Impact’s Patrick Leduc, Puerto Rico Islanders’ Marco Velez, and Charleston Battery’s Kevin Nylen were also selected.
Minnesota Thunder striker Leo Gibson earned a place in the weekly team’s attack after scoring four goals in their 5-0 win over Carolina, while fellow marksman Sebastien Le Toux partnered Gibson up front after his hat-trick performance in a 4-0 home win over California. His efforts against the Victory also gave the Frenchman the final USL-1 Player of the Week honour for the regular season, with Le Toux finishing in a two-way tie at the top of USL-1 scoring charts with Montreal’s Charles Gbeke after scoring 10 goals in 28 regular-season games.
