VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC confirmed today that midfielder Deybi Flores has been called up to the Honduras U-23 men's national team for an upcoming friendly.
Flores will be away from Monday, February 22 to Thursday, February 25 and will miss the 'Caps preseason match versus host Portland Timbers on Wednesday, February 24 at the 2016 Simple Invitational.
He will be on the Honduras U-23 roster for the friendly against Colombia U-23 on Wednesday, February 24 at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The two national U-23 sides clash again on the following Saturday, February 27, after Flores has rejoined Whitecaps FC in Portland.
Last month, Whitecaps FC signed midfielder Flores to a multi-year contract after finalizing his transfer from Honduran side Club Deportivo Motagua. Flores was originally acquired by the club on a one-year loan from CD Motagua in February 2015.
The 19-year old Flores has had a productive start to the preseason, scoring a goal against New England Revolution on February 6 at the 2016 Desert Friendlies in Tucson, Arizona.
Flores recently made his senior international debut, playing 22 minutes for a young Honduras side in their 2-0 friendly win versus Cuba at Estadio Juan Ramón Brevé Vargas in Juticalpa on December 16.
Prior to his earning his first senior international cap, Flores saw action for Honduras in the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand, where he played every minute of all three matches for Los Catrachos. He helped Honduras qualify for the tournament when they finished second in Group B of the 2015 U-20 CONCACAF Championship, where Flores started all five of his tournament appearances, playing all 450 minutes of action.
In the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games, Flores started all five fixtures, scoring a goal in the Honduras U-21 team's 3-2 win over Jamaica. The 5-foot-11 midfielder also represented his national side in the 2013 U-17 CONCACAF Championship, where he made five appearances, including the third place match versus Canada.
Flores finished his first year with Whitecaps FC with 11 starts in 15 first team appearances across all competitions, including two appearances in the Amway Canadian Championship and all four CONCACAF Champions League matches. In addition, Flores spent time with Whitecaps FC 2, starting in all three of his appearances in the United Soccer League.
