Vancouver Whitecaps FC newcomer Sebastian Fernandez made quite the statement in his MLS debut last weekend, a debut that included Week 1's MLS Goal of the Week.
Fernandez claimed the initial award of the 2014 season on Friday for his game-winning rocket in Whitecaps FC's 4-1 rout of New York Red Bulls. The Uruguayan midfielder's stunning strike, which came in the 49th minute of the match, claimed a little more than 39 per cent of the vote.
Mauro Diaz finished in second place for his free kick in FC Dallas' 3-2 triumph against the Montreal Impact, but he fell short of Fernandez's top spot by a wide margin.
