Cristian Techera suspended for use of offensive language

NEW YORK, NY – Major League Soccer today announced that Vancouver Whitecaps FC midfielder Cristian Techera has been issued a three-game suspension and undisclosed fine for use of offensive language during Vancouver’s match against the Philadelphia Union on June 23. Techera will serve his three-game suspension during Whitecaps FC matches on July 1 against Colorado Rapids, July 7 against Chicago Fire, and July 14 at D.C. United.


MLS has a zero tolerance policy against offensive, discriminatory language at its games, and is committed to creating an environment in which all individuals are treated with respect and dignity.

Whitecaps FC are advocates of the league’s zero tolerance policy regarding offensive language, fully supports the league’s decision and believe in providing an environment in which players, staff, partners, and supporters are treated with dignity and respect. We know that this incident is not a true representation of Cristian’s character, he is remorseful, and has learned from this experience.

I sincerely apologize for using offensive language in our match last Saturday. I am reaching out to the other player involved to apologize. What I said is not an accurate reflection of who I am or my character. I have learned from my mistake and accept all responsibility.
