HAMILTON, ON – It was an exciting final at Tim Hortons Field, as Vancouver Whitecaps FC Girls Elite defeated CS Mont-Royal Outremont 3-2 on penalties, after being held 2-2 in regular time to win their second Women’s Inter-Provincial Championship in a row.

The match began with Whitecaps FC in early control. Kaylee Hunter got the first chance inside 10 minutes, being found in behind on the right. Hunter tried to fire a low shot past Lea Palacio-Tellier but the CSMRO ‘keeper managed to get a hold of the shot. Téa Mayson made a huge block not long later, denying Marie-Eve Bernard O’Breham’s shot from troubling the Whitecaps goal.

CSMRO, however, drew first blood in the 23rd minute. A lofted ball by Shayla He found Anais Naila Oularbi in behind, who then chipped over the onrushing Morgan McAslan.

Chloe Taylor tried her luck a few minutes after the goal, popping a shot from distance but had it rising all the way through. McAslan then denied CSMRO a second on the half-hour mark, going full stretch to palm wide a Eva Bouity header.

Whitecaps FC got a lifeline when Quinn Johnson got taken down in the box in the 36th minute. Kaylee Hunter stepped up and dispatched her penalty to make it 1-1.

Whitecaps FC kept the pressure on afterwards, searching to get the go-ahead goal right until the referee blew for the halftime whistle.

The ‘Caps continued their search for their second goal when the second half began, but it was CSMRO that regained the lead in the 58th minute. Osamede Iyare laid it off for Joëlle Gosselin on the right to curl it into the side netting for 2-1.

Whitecaps FC had a quick response, equalizing six minutes later as Hunter got her brace after picking up the ball in the box and firing it in first time.

Jessica De Filippo, fresh off the bench, headed an effort onto the post after latching onto a whipped cross in the 73rd minute. Josie Longhurst picked the ball up close to the back post and lashed a shot just wide of the net just a little while later.

Hunter almost had the game-winner right at the end, after Jaime Perrault sent the young forward in behind to go one-on-one, but her shot skewed right into the hands of Palacio-Tellier.

The match would then be decided on penalties after 90 minutes, with both teams unable to get the better of the other.

Both ‘keepers made some crucial saves during the shootout, with McAslan coming up huge for the 'Caps. In the end, it was Rose Hughe’s effort smashing off the crossbar that gave the Whitecaps the Inter-Provincial championship for a second year in a row.
