‘Caps visit local schools for Family Literacy Week

Carl Richmond Library

Last week communities across the province joined together to celebrate Family Literacy Week. From January 21 to 27, schools and communities worked to show young children the importance of reading in school, at home, and at local libraries.

To get involved in the program, club ambassador Carl Valentine visited one library and two elementary schools to read to some very excited children. On Tuesday, January 22 he made his first visit to Richmond Library. Approximately 60 grade two and three students from Brighouse Elementary School came to listen to Carl’s engaging story telling. After two great books and some very creative questions, Carl was able to show the children how fun reading can be.

On Thursday, Carl visited Mary Hill Elementary in Port Coquitlam. During a full school assembly Carl read a story about how a “liger” (part lion part tiger) learned to fit in with the rest of the jungle.

The final stop for Literacy Week was at Heath Traditional Elementary in North Delta. Joining Carl at this visit was ‘Caps mascot Spike. Carl and Spike started the afternoon by reading to a group of classes in the school library. Then, just before the end of the day, the whole school piled into the hallways and sat down for “stop-drop-and-read”. Carl and Spike roamed the hallways encouraging the readers and even giving out a few high-fives.
