Vancouver Whitecaps FC vs. Seattle Sounders FC
MLS Regular Season - VWFC Match #21
Tuesday, October 27, 2020 - 7:08 p.m. PT
Providence Park, Portland, OR
TV: TSN - RADIO: TSN Radio 1040
PEAKING AT THE RIGHT TIME: Whitecaps FC look to continue their strong form as of late, having won three of their last four matches. Each of the three wins have come at Providence Park, where the rest of their regular season schedule will be played. Their nine points in their last four outings is the second-highest total across MLS behind only Philadelphia Union's 10 points.
CASCADIA CHALLENGE: Tuesday is the first of two straight Cascadia matches for the 'Caps, with the Timbers also on deck on Sunday. Not only do the 'Caps face both of their neighbouring rivals this week, they also battle the winners of the last two MLS competitions in the defending MLS Cup champions Sounders and MLS is Back Tournament victors Timbers.
ULTERIOR MOTIVE: The 'Caps are right in the midst of a close battle for a playoff spot, while the Sounders are neck-and-neck with Sporting KC and Portland Timbers for the top seed out West. The 'Caps are within three points of five teams in the standings - two clubs ahead of them, and three below them. They will have to stop the second-place Sounders, who are hungry for their first win since October 7 (0W-1L-2D and one postponed match since).
GROWING PARTNERSHIP: The growing midfield partnership between first-year 'Caps Janio Bikel and Leonard Owusu could be key if they are assigned the crucial task of cutting the head off the Seattle attack in Nicolas Lodeiro. The Sounders have yet to win a match where Lodeiro has played and not scored or assisted since October 6, 2019. Bikel and Owusu have started together in the Vancouver midfield in every match both were available since September 27.
DANGER AREAS: Head coach Marc Dos Santos has previously talked about the importance of getting out in transition against the Sounders and exploiting the right areas. The chemistry amongst the trio of Lucas Cavallini, Cristian Dajome, and Fredy Montero are likely to factor into the success of the 'Caps attack versus Seattle. Dajome and Montero have combined for eight assists, seven of which resulted in a goal from one of the Spanish-speaking trio.
RISING TO THE OCCASION: Whitecaps FC face a quick turnaround after their Saturday night win against the Quakes, while the Sounders had the weekend to rest, having last played on Thursday. However, the 'Caps have proven their ability to play on this year, having gone 3W-1L-0D in games on only two days rest.
