Several Vancouver Whitecaps FC alums made the headlines in college soccer on the weekend, and not for the first time this season, UBC Thunderbirds striker Janine Frazao led the way.
Frazao bagged a stunning five goals in the T-Birds’ monster win, North Carolina’s Amber Brooks scored and provided for the Tar Heels while Erin McNulty had two wins – including a shutout - for Penn State.
On the men’s side, defender Daniel Stanese was a standout for Florida Gulf Coast University while Niko Saler ensured the University of Alberta escaped with a draw from their entertaining battle with UBC.
MEN
Stanese was a rock in the backline as FGCU outlasted USC Upstate 1-0 on Friday night before following that up with a 2-0 triumph over North Florida on Sunday.
In Edmonton, Saler sent in a cross that was tucked home by Jonah Feil with nine minutes to go, giving the Golden Bears a deserved 2-2 tie with unbeaten UBC. Earlier, ‘Caps alum Reynold Stewart gave the T-Birds the lead with a goal in the 62nd minute.
Back in BC at Trinity Western University, defender and Whitecaps FC Prospects alum Jordan Whitehead’s cross from the flank was directed into the back of the net two minutes from time to give TWU a 1-0 result away to University of Saskatchewan.
WOMEN
Frazao’s amazing five-goal haul guided UBC to a crushing 13-0 win over UNBC and catapulted her to the top of the Canada West career scoring chart with 46 goals. For good measure, Frazao also had an assist.
Other ‘Caps alums also got in on the act for the rampant T-Birds. Midfielder Taylor Shannik had two goals and assist while Tamara Roughead (midfielder) chimed in with two helpers.
North Carolina senior midfielder Brooks was a big contributor as her Tar Heels thrashed Clemson 4-0 on Friday night. Not only did the 2011 ‘Caps women's player score, she also had two assists.
Oregon State star Jenna Richardson scored in the 63rd minute to give the Beavers a 2-0 win away to Colorado.
Goalkeeper McNulty earned her second complete shutout of the season and made three saves in the Nittany Lions’ 4-0 triumph over Nebraska on Friday. Two days later, she followed up that performance with five saves for PSU in their 2-1 victory over Iowa Hawkeyes.
Down in Tampa, Florida, Taylor Patterson recorded her fourth assist of the season when she provided the game-winning pass for South Florida against Syracuse on Friday. Then on Sunday, Patterson set up fellow former Whitecaps FC women’s team member Demi Stokes for a goal in the Bulls’ 2-0 defeat of St. John’s.
Staying in the United States, Brandi Vega had a goal and assist for Washington State as her team beat USC 4-0 on Friday.
And last but not least, Trinity Western secured a comprehensive 7-0 win over Northern British Columbia on Friday at Rogers Field thanks to goals from former ‘Caps Prospects Tessa Meyer and Jenna Di Nunzio, while women’s team goalkeeper Kristen Funk picked up yet another shutout.
