The third week of ’Caps at College saw a few Blue and White alumni get on the scoresheet as they continue to navigate their way through the collegiate season.
MEN
Alex Rowley opened his account for Simon Fraser University with a goal in a 6-0 romp over Thompson Rivers at Terry Fox Field on Friday night.
Rowley was joined by Jason van Blerk in the Clan’s starting XI a few days later in their 3-0 victory against Vancouver Island.
Across town meanwhile, the UBC Thunderbirds will open their CIS season Friday night at Thunderbird Stadium against the University of Calgary Dinos.
The T-birds – who boast Whitecaps FC alums Gagandeep Dosanjh, Devin Gunenc, William Hyde, Navid Mashinchi and Reynold Stewart - will head into the clash buoyed by its position in the CIS top 10 following four straight pre-season shutouts.
South of the border, defender Declan Rodriguez continues to impress as a starter for Wisconsin-Milwaukee as he helped guide the Panthers to glory in the Panther Invitational.
Florida Gulf Coast University defender Daniel Stanese played the entire match in a double-overtime thriller for the Eagles, who defeated Bucknell 2-1 in their home opener.
Finishing up on the men’s side, Ben McKendry came off the bench in the 23rd minute as his number three ranked University of New Mexico Lobos comfortably swept aside the 20th ranked SMU Mustangs 3-1 in Oklahoma.
WOMEN
Through the first six matches of their NCAA season, ’Caps stalwart defender Shannon Woeller has captained her Rutgers side to a 5W-1L-0D start, including a 2-0 win over Sam Houston State.
’Caps alums Paige Adams and Monica Lam-Feist both netted for the Wisconsin Badgers in a solid 4-2 road win against Loyola-Marymount, which made up for the 2-0 defeat at the hands of UCLA a few days earlier. Adams is one of three Badgers with seven points this season.
Jenna Richardson returned to Oregon State after recently playing for Canada at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, but her Beavers squad ultimately fell for the first time this season.
Like the men, the UBC women’s team opens its season at home on Friday against Calgary. The Thunderbirds are stacked with plenty of Whitecaps FC alums, including goalkeepers Alyssa Williamson and Leah Peric, defenders Sydney Morrison and Meghan Pasternak, midfield trio Taylor Shannik, Tamara Roughead and Madison Guy, as well as striker Shayla Chorney.
Goalkeeper Erin McNulty played 65 minutes and made one save to help eighth-ranked Penn State shutout the Pittsburgh Panthers 3-0.
Over at Arkansas State, Girls Elite alum Lindsay Johansen played 79 minutes and had two shots for the Red Wolves in their solid 4-0 victory over Jackson State.
Striker Lucielle Kozlov was on the pitch for almost 50 minutes in Dartmouth’s first win of the 2012 season, a 2-1 result against South Florida.
Lastly on the women’s front, Elise Wyatt played a little over an hour to help steer the DePaul Blue Demons to a heart-stopping 2-1 overtime win away to Dayton in Ohio.
