VANCOUVER, BC – It was an immensely successful month of October for many products of Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s youth system, as they continue to progress their soccer careers in collegiate play – both domestically and south of the border.
In terms of team success, many Whitecaps FC alumni represented the Blue and White well in the NCAA ranks with Simon Fraser University’s men’s team, including former U-18 Residency players Alex Rowley, Jason van Blerk, and Spencer DeBoice, who along with former Whitecaps FC women’s coach Alan Koch, helped lift the team to athird-place ranking in the NCAA Division II.
In Canadian University Sport (CIS), Whitecaps FC alumni Gavin Barrett and Cam Hundal have helped the University of Victoria Vikes to asixth-place national ranking after finishing off an eight-match October.
Over on the women’s side, 12 former ‘Caps have contributed to a solid October for seventh-ranked UBC, where they went 6W-1L-0D,including a victory in the Canada West quarter-finals.
University of Victoria also has had some Blue and White help as former Girls Elite/Women’s team members Natasha Magnus, Jaclyn Sawicki, and Allie Wiebe have all contributed to the team reachinga season ending fourth-place ranking in the CIS Top 10.
Finally, Trinity Western slotted in at eighth in the final CIS Top 10 rankingsthrough the aid of former 'Caps Natalie Boyd, Jennifer Castillo, Jenna Di Nunzio, Vanessa Kovacs, Tessa Meyer, Lindsey Pulice, Alicia Tesan, and Nikki Wright.
Men:
Some outstanding men’s performances were highlighted by former U-18 Residency striker Brody Huitema aiding Duke University’s men’s team with two goals, two assists, and nine shots on goal in seven games in the month of October,including a beauty against Elon on October 22.
Former U-18 Residency goalkeeper Callum Irving had an October to remember. He capped it off by backstoppingKentucky to a scoreless draw against Tulsa,where he stopped a career-high seven shots, including six in the first half. He then earned his fifth clean sheet of the seasonwith a 2-0 triumph over Marshall to end the month. He now has amassed an impressive 1.13 goals against average for the season.
Langara College’s Carlos Marquez also won some hardware in October,as he was named a First-Team All-Star and Rookie of the Year for the Falcons. The team went 5W-2L-1D in October while maintaining their hold of second place in the PACWEST standings.
Carlos del Aquila leads Trinity Western in scoring with three goals on the season so far. Led by former Whitecaps FC women’s coach Pat Rohla,the Spartans enjoyed a perfect Octoberin which they went 3W-0L-2D.
UBC finished in first place in Canada West’s Pacific Division with a record of 12W-1L-0D. Niall Cousens was hugein a 8-0 win over Lethbridge, where he scored one goal and had two assists. Vancouver’s reigning PDL leading goalscorer was alsonamed to the 2013 Canada West First Team – as was Navid Mashinchi. Maschinchi is now fourth on the team this season with six goals, while scoring two goals and two assists in five games in October.
Reynold Stewart is second on the team with eight goals, two of them coming in a 4-1 win over UNBC on October 5. He also scored two goals and an assist in the last two games of October. Stewart was alsonamed Most Valuable Player of the Canada West conferencefor his efforts in a tremendous year for the midfielder, while being named to the 2013 Canada West First Team as well.
University of Victoria’s Cam Hundal was a man possessed in October, as he potted home seven goals and one assist in eight games in October,including a hat-trick against the University of Calgary in a 4-1 triumph for the Vikes. Hundal also joined his fellow Whitecaps FC alumni onthe 2013 Canada West First Team.
Women:
DePaul University’s Elise Wyatt caught fire in a three-game stretch in October, as she netted one goal and two assists in three matches from October 6 to 17.
Whitecaps FC Girls Elite graduateSummer Clarke scored a hat-trick against Arkansas in a 5-3 win on October 4 for the LSU Tigers. Clarke has been lights out in October, as she also scored both goals,including the game-winner against Alabama on October 6, in a 2-1 double overtime victory. Clarke leads LSU with eight goals on the season.
Fellow LSU Tiger Emma Fletcher alsoassisted on all three of Clarke’s goals against Arkansas, and on one of Clarke’s goals against Alabama. Fletcher leads the team with 11 assists on the season. These two former ‘Caps are flying high down south, asthey lead LSU in points with 19 for Clarke and 13 for Fletcher.
University of South Florida’s Demi Stokes is nowtied for second on the team with six goals and second with five assists. Stokes was stellar this past month, scoring three goals goals and adding three assists in eight games.
UBC’s Janine Frazao also had a great October, amassing three goals and two assists, including one assistagainst University of Calgary in the Canada West quarterfinals on October 26.Shayla Chorney contributed with three goals and an assist in October,including the game winner against Calgary on October 13. Madison Guy also put three goals home in the seven games in October for the Thunderbirds,including a two-goal performance against Winnipeg on October 5th.
UBC’s Jasmin Dhanda was a monster in October, as she scored five goals and three assists in a seven-game span, while also taking the team lead in goals with six on the season. Her best performance was scoring both goals for UBC in theirCanada West quarterfinal against Calgary to give the Thunderbirds the 2-1 victory and a spot in the Final Four.
Taylor Shannik was also on her game for UBC in October, distributing four assists in seven matches, bringing her season total up to five.
University of Fraser Valley goalkeeper Kayla Klim had a tremendous October. She was named theCanada West ThirdStar of the Week for the first week of October, and Player of the Match on October 4 and October 11.
UFV’s Carley Radomski was named Player of the Matchfor her performance on October 5 in a 5-0 win over of Lethbridge, where she scored one goal, her second of the season.She also earned the honour on October 12 in a 2-2 draw against the University of Regina.
UVic’s Natasha Magnus was terrific for the Vikes, as she scored three goals in seven games in October, including a pair in a 4-0 victory against the University of Winnipeg on October 19.
Washington State Cougars goalkeeper Gurveen Clair amassed a record of 4-3 in October, with all four wins coming as clean sheets. Nicole Setterlund also scored three goals in October,including a two-goal performance against Arizonawhere the midfielder scored her fifth and sixth goals of the season. The team’s overall record stands at 11W-3L-3D.
