After a staggered start to Week 7 for Whitecaps FC in Major League Soccer (MLS) with a loss to Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday, Rennie's squad bounced back to show some true grit on Saturday against FC Dallas. Camilo returned to the starting XI after fully recovering from his quadricep injury and danced his way through two defenders before launching the winning goal into the net. More a man of action than words, the Brazilian had a very simple explanation of how the goal came to be, “[Young-Pyo] Lee gave me the pass, and I dribbled and scored. The entire squad was steadfast in their resolve to earn the squad their fifth shut-out of the season on Saturday. One matchup in particular that head coach Martin Rennie was curious to see play out was how right fullback Young-Pyo Lee would fare with Dallas winger Brek Shea, who has as many tricks up his sleeve as he's had curious haircuts in the last two seasons, as one reporter noted. "Rennie commented post-game that he was interested to see how Lee would cope with the pacey Brek Shea. Amazingly well as it turned out. So much so that Dallas moved Shea to the other wing towards the end of the game." (Michael McColl - Away From The Numbers)
In his own words Rennie said Lee has been “fantastic” all season. “He is the kind of person that we want to keep getting on our team,” he said. “[It’s] almost impossible to find another one, but we’re going to work hard to do that and we’re happy we’ve got him.” (Bruce Constantineau - Vancouver Sun)
'Caps forward Omar Salgado also showed some poise on Saturday, making his first appearance as a starter this season. Coach Rennie expressed a high opinion of Salgado noting that, "he's the best player at the club at crossing the ball with pressure on him. He did it twice, once in each half, and if we'd been in better positions maybe we'd have got a goal from it." (Marc Weber - The Province)
Striker Darren Mattocks was the first pick by Whitecaps FC in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft and now he's been selected by his native Jamaica as well. Mattocks was named as one of four forwards to be summoned to play for the Reggae Boyz. as he remains on the recovery trail and hopes to be back on the field soon. (Sean A. Meanwhile in the Prairies, the 'Caps held a clinic in Saskatoon this weekend, with discussions on future affiliations. 49 boys and girls from throughout the area attended the three-day clinic, as Whitecaps FC continue to maintain their commitment to raising the level of awareness for soccer across Canada, while also "identifying some top talent". Both the U-16 and U-18 squads tallied wins against DeAnza Force on Saturday; and both squads would fire while the iron was hot yet again, earning wins against Santa Cruz Breakers on Sunday with each clinching a spot in the playoffs through the result. In a busy weekend of soccer, Whitecaps FC reserves also took to the pitch in a match against Portland Timbers reserves on Sunday afternoon.
