'Caps Chronicle - March 20, 2012

WHITECAPS FC IN THE NEWS:

There was some unfortunate news out of Whitecaps FC camp, as second overall SuperDraft pickDarren Mattockshas been hospitalized with burns to his chest and upper arm.Mattocks suffered the injury while cooking dinner on Sunday night. “It was an unfortunate accident, but Darren is handling everything well and remains in good spirits,” said head coach Martin Rennie. Make sure to send Darren your well wishes on Facebook or with the #GetWellDarren hashtag on Twitter. (whitecapsfc.com)

Everyone wishes Darren a speedy recovery so he can be back on the field with his teammates in no time.

The ‘Caps have many goals they want to achieve this season under head coachMartin Rennie. One, of those goals was to have an improved defence and - with back-to-back clean sheets - that goal seems to be within reach. Both goalkeepers have been needed in the first two matches. However, it’s Cannon who steals the spotlight this week as his save on Chivas USA striker Casey Townsend has been nominated for Save of the Week. Make sure to vote for Cannon’s save! Another one of the ‘Caps goals this year is to stay healthy, as last year the club was riddled with injuries. To achieve this goal the Blue and White have paid special attention to the medical side of things. People talk about the connections on the field Hassli/ Le Toux and DeMerit/Bonjour, but it’s a connection off the pitch in the trainer’s room between Dr. Rick Celebrini and Dr. Michael Young that could make the biggest difference for Whitecaps FC this year. Two matches and two wins for Whitecaps FC and now MLSsoccer.com have ranked the ‘Caps in seventhposition in their power rankings while Soccer America have Martin Rennie’s side in sixth position. This week’s upcoming home match against D.C. United will be another tough test for Rennie’s side as they take on a side led by reigning MLS MVP, Golden Boot winner, and Canadian international Dwayne De Rosario. Make you sure you have your tickets for the first night match at BC Place this season.

Recently, Whitecaps FC participated in Pink Shirt Day in support of an Anti-Bullying lifestyle. Captain Jay Demerit led the charge on this front and this campaign has proved to be highly successful again as the campaign raised over $150,000 for the Boys and Girls Club of the lower mainland.
