Canada continues to be a hot-bed for young talented soccer players. From the tremendous showing of the Canadian Under-23 team, to Whitecaps FC Residency players such as Sam Adekugbe (pictured) who just recently turned 17 and impressed his coaches in yesterday's Reserve match versus Seattle. "Individually, I think there were a lot of good performances," explained Whitecaps FC assistant coach Paul Ritchie. "Performances from the younger players they can be proud of." Those youngsters will be hoping to play in MLS one day, who have started the season undefeated with none conceded in three matches. This has been no small feat for the 'Caps, and a big reason that's been able to happen goes by the name of Joe Cannon. One reporter explains how, "Once again, goalkeeper Joe Cannon played a huge part in preserving the shutout, making a vital reaction save off a Hamdi Salihi header in the 67th minute in what was the highlight of a stifling defensive chess match." Not surprisingly that highlight earned Cannon his second Major League Soccer (MLS) Save of the Week nomination. Cannon got the nod last week for his save on a strike by Chivas USA's Casey Townsend, and his heroics ended up winning by a landslide. With beautiful weather all weekend, Whitecaps FC held the first ever boys edition of the Whitecaps FC College Showcase at Newton Athletic Park, hosted by Central City Breakers and Surrey FC. “We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect setting for the showcase,” exclaimed Dan Lenarduzzi, Whitecaps FC director of soccer development. “Feedback from everyone involved has been fantastic, so all-in-all it was a very successful event.” (Brandon Timko, Paul Albi & Carl Valentine (video) - whitecapsfc.com)
