‘Caps Chronicle: The final countdown

'Caps Chronicle - Feb. 29, 2012

WHITECAPS FC IN THE NEWS:
It's exactly ‘ten’ days until the season opener against Montreal Impact on March 10, at BC Place, so to add to the excitement we'll be doing a countdown themed ‘Caps Chronicle for each day leading up to First Kick, beginning with the number ‘ten’.

The signing of striker Etienne Barbara yesterday brings Vancouver Whitecaps FC's arsenal of forwards to ‘ten’. Coincidentally it was ‘ten’ years after the year 2000 that Martin Rennie discovered Barbara in Malta at a match against none other than Camillo Sanvezzo. Barbara tallied ‘ten’ assists in his two years with the Carolina RailHawks, and if you multiply those numbers together you also have the number of goals (20) that Barbara scored last year when he earned NASL league MVP honors under Rennie. (Simon Borg – MLSsoccer.com)

If that wasn't intriguing enough, then consider that the roman-numeral for ‘ten’ is ‘X’ which is remarkably similar to the Whitecaps symbol repeated in the stitching of our secondary blue jerseys. Be sure to get all your Whitecaps gear, including jerseys of your new favourite ‘Caps players, before the home opener HERE.

The number ‘ten’ spelled backwards is 'net', which is something Whitecaps opponents may have some difficulty finding the back of this season against net-minder Joe Cannon's over ‘ten’ years of experience playing in Major League Soccer (MLS). Cannon spoke with reporters yesterday about the positive attitude of the squad as they prepare for the season. (Marc Weber – The Province)

Speaking of nets, Whitecaps FC is the only MLS team with three players (Eric Hassli, Camilo Sanvezzo and Sebastian Le Toux) who managed to hit the back of the net ‘ten’ or more times during regular season play last year. Hopefully you won’t have to wait ‘ten’ days to see your next ‘Caps goal though, as they play their final Disney Pro Soccer Classic group stage matchup against MLS Eastern Conference side Sporting Kansas City in Orlando, Florida tournament in Orlando, Florida today at 3 p.m. PT. You can watch the match streaming on MLSsoccer.com HERE. (MLSsoccer.com)

The past weekend marked the beginning the first full season for the EA Sports BC Soccer Premier League with kids over the age of ‘ten’ joining what one reporter remarked as, "the only provincial-wide elite youth league in Canada partnered by a professional Major League Soccer club." If you're a youth and into soccer, then you'll want to be reading more about it HERE. (Kimiya Shokoohi - The Province)

Armenia rallied to best Canada's men's national team during a friendly in Cyprus earlier today. Even though the men in red and white opened the scoring they were unable to ride out the pressure from a dominant Aremenian side. (Rudi Schuller - MLSsoccer.com)
