Captain Jay DeMerit finally opened up his account for Whitecaps FC scoring the lone goal in the road win. There was no stopping the centre back as he charged towards net like a rhino, burying the ball with a diving header from a set piece off a corner by teammate Davide Chiumiento. "On the road, sometimes that's what it takes," DeMerit said. "Guys getting behind the ball, keeping a clean sheet, and scoring on a set piece.” (Marc Weber – The Province)
The High Road:
DeMerit’s goal was more than just a personal milestone, it was the game winner for what will go in the club history books as the team’s first ever road victory in MLS. The captain hopes now that the seal has been broken and the first road win behind them it will help the team’s focus, "We don't have that pressure on us anymore, and now we can go away from home and try to get clean sheets and wins." Show Stoppers:
Both ‘Caps goalkeepers would also come up big in the match and combined the two shot-blockers would help the team to yet another MLS first for the club, back to back shutouts.
Joe Cannon found himself being tested very early on and was forced to come off his line more than once to confront some threatening attacks. The netminder managed to thrust his hand into the air at the last second and brush a dangerous looking strike by Chivas' striker Casey Townsend just over the bar, in what may very well make the list of candidates for MLS Save of the Week. After suffering a deep thigh contusion from a collision with Chivas USA’s Ryan Smith, keeper Brad Knighton was immediately called into action for the first ever time with Whitecaps FC. Moments after coming on the pitch he impressively punched a corner clear with his very first touch off the ball. “Your name could be called at any time, and fortunately I did the right things before the game and tried to stay in the game mentally.” (Martin MacMahon – MLSsoccer.com)
