WHITECAPS FC IN THE NEWS:
Fans of Vancouver Whitecaps FC were awash with excitement after the announcement yesterday of Scottish international midfielder Barry Robson joining the club as a Designated Player this July.
Despite offers other European clubs and his current side Middlesbrough, Robson told reporters that signing with Vancouver was a “no-brainer”. "Yeah, I had offers from elsewhere," Robson told reporters, "But as soon as I heard something might happen in Vancouver, it was my first choice.” (Marc Weber – The Province)
One reporter even joked that Barry was a perfect match for Vancouver, noting that, “…the new big signing already has a Vancouver street named after him.” (Matt Kieltyka – Metro News)
With fellow Scottish international Kris Boyd now playing for rival club Portland Timbers under yet another Scot, coach John Spencer, the May 26th derby match should prove a veritable clash of the clans. Canadian Soccer New’s Michael McColl spoke with Robson about the Cascadia rivalry, and his experience with European derbies. “They're great games to play in,” explained Robson. “They're games I've always relished and enjoyed."
‘Caps captain Jay DeMerit responds to the comparison of his story (Rise & Shine) to that of basketball phenom Jeremy Lin, stating, “I am flattered to be mentioned along with him as an athlete who has gone against the odds and made it.” Read all about it in his latest blog post for Goal.com, as well as his reaction to the Robson signing, and what kind of ambitions he has for the coming season HERE. It wouldn’t be surprising if Canada’s women’s national team sent a Valentine to Brazil’s women’s side considering how often they get together. It was announced yesterday that the two teams will meet for the fourth time in sixteen months when they play a friendly next month in Massachusetts. (Daniel Squizzato – Canadian Soccer News)
