In July, Vancouver Whitecaps FC loaned out four players for duty with other professional clubs in Europe, North, and Central America in hopes of increased playing time to further their soccer development. Here’s an update on how they’re doing.
Sam Adekugbe: IFK Göteborg
So far, Sam Adekugbe’s loan to Swedish side IFK Göteborg has proved fruitful.
The 22-year-old Canadian international has made six league appearances, including five starts, for a total of 418 minutes. In those matches, Göteborg have posted a 3W-1L-2D record. Adekugbe also made an appearance for IFK in the Svenska Cupen – a 5-0 victory over Landvetter IS.
Canadian national team head coach Octavio Zambrano has taken notice, calling the athletic left back for duty in Canada’s friendly versus Jamaica on Saturday in Toronto.
Ben McKendry: FC Edmonton
Since arriving in Edmonton, Ben McKendry has appeared in five games for the North American Soccer League club. After coming on as a substitute in his first three appearances, McKendry earned starts in Edmonton’s last two games for a total of 238 minutes.
The 24-year-old Vancouver-born central midfielder has recorded six tackles, five interceptions, and is passing at an 83.6 per cent accuracy rate.
Kyle Greig: FC Cincinnati
Kyle Greig has appeared in FC Cincinnati’s last six games since arriving on July 11.
The 6-foot-2 striker got his first start with FCC on August 5, scoring the opening goal in a 2-2 draw with Orlando City B. Expect Greig to get more playing time as FC Cincinnati continue to jockey for a playoff spot in the USL Eastern Conference.

Deybi Flores: C.D. Motagua
Deybi Flores has started all three of C.D. Motagua’s matches to start the Honduran Liga Nacional Apertura season, helping them go unbeaten during that stretch with a victory over Honduras Progreso and draws with Juticalpa and Real Sociedad.
