Canada's men’s U-20 national team ended their Marbella Cup campaign today with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Scotland's Under-21 side.
The Canadians, who had Vancouver Whitecaps FC striker Caleb Clarke as well as midfielders Bryce Alderson and Ben Fisk, travelled to Spain for the 10-day training camp, which included matches against USA, Azerbaijan and Scotland.
Clarke, Alderson and Fisk were in the side that stunned the United States 2-1 October 10 – with Clarke netting the match-winner - but Les Rouges were humbled 1-0 by Azerbaijan two days later.
Today’s match with Scotland took place on the second last day of the camp, and Canada had their work cut out for them when they conceded a goal by Scotland captain Stuart Armstrong in just the seventh minute.
The Reds came close moments later when winger Alessandro Riggi’s low cross into the penalty box flew by everyone and went out of play.
Around the midway point of the first half, defender Doneil Henry connected on a free kick but his header went wide.
Then in the 60th minute, Keven Aleman took a pass from Riggi but his weak shot from inside the penalty box was easily saved.
This sparked Scotland into action and they were able to clinch the win in the 90th minute through Tony Watt.
After the match, Fisk took to Twitter to focus on the positives of the training camp. “Another tough loss today but overall good camp,” he wrote. “Great group of guys we've got. So excited to see what we can accomplish together.”
